In 2013, I had never been as excited to drive 9 hours from my home in Maryland to the middle of nowhere (Munster, Indiana). The normally sleepy town was hosting hundreds of avid beer fans as they ascended upon the town’s crown jewel, 3 Floyds Brewing. It was Dark Lord Day. A day of absurdly rare beers, beer camaraderie, and of course, metal music. Empty bottles of Cantilion, KBS, and everything in between lined the driveway. A sacrifice to the beer gods. If there ever was a Woodstock of beer, this was it.

And now, it’s all over.

No, Dark Lord Day hasn’t stopped. It still continues on in spite of Covid. But gone are the communal drinking tables. Silenced are the death metal bands on the makeshift stage. What was once a spectacular festival has now turned into a curbside pickup. I purchased my three bottles of the Russian Imperial Stout for $20 a bottle (maximum of 3). Now, your only option is to buy a 4 pack for $170, granted one is barrel aged. Then you just drive away.

I understand that the pandemic has changed a lot of things. But having experienced DLD myself, this new format seems so against the ethos of the brewery**. Don’t get me wrong, 3 Floyds makes/made some fantastic beers. But it feels like they are sacrificing some of their personality in favor of altering their marquee event. My only hope is that this is temporary, and someday I can return, have an Alpha King bratwurst, and enjoy what is one of the greatest moments of this beer hobby of mine.

**100% positive 3 Floyds doesn’t care about my opinion.
