The US Open Beer Championships are a rare competition in the beer world. It is the only competition that allows breweries AND homebrewers to compete against each other across all of their style categories. Due to Covid, there were no homebrew entries this year, but the breweries showed up en masse.
All beers are tasted blind, meaning there are no labels other than the ones that indicate the beer style. While there is an exhausting list of possible categories to enter (132 or so), there are plenty of breweries to fill out the entries.
This year’s grand champion was none other than Toppling Goliath out of Iowa. They won four gold medals and two silver medals overall. Their gold medals include King Sue DIPA, Mornin Delight 2021 Imperial Stout, Assassin 2021 Barrel Aged Extreme Imperial Stout and KBBS 2020 Barrel Aged Specialty Stout.
