In the ‘Middle Ages’ of craft beer history (so 15 years ago or so), Lagunitas was one of the go-to breweries for the hoppiest beers you could find. While there are now plenty of other breweries offering great IPAs (and beers in general), Lagunitas’ special releases still hold a special place in the hearts of many beer fans. That is why it is with great joy that I tell you about the release of two beers: The Waldos’ Special Ale, and Maximus Colossal IPA.

Waldo, as it is affectionately known, use to literally be a treasure hunt. Only select bars across the country were given any keg(s), and they were not allowed to reveal they had it till release day. While it is much more easily accessible now, it is still just as potent and hard to get your hands on. An archetype for the Triple IPA, Waldo is a hop bomb in the tradition of the West Coast IPA. One sniff and you will immediately be reminded of that stickee ickee green goodness, and that 4/20 must be near.

Maximus Colossal is an amped-up version of their long-time core beer, Maximus. At 9% ABV, it is on the high end of Double IPAs, but the brewery always packs it full of the piney, grapefruity aromas and flavors they are known for. Add in additional notes of spice and berry, and you get a classic that has truly been transformed. This beer has been added to their core beer line-up, so expect to start seeing more of it.

Lagunitas has near national distribution along with great four and six-pack prices, so there is no excuse not to seek these two out.
