Few beers hold as much reverence in the beer community as AleSmith’s Speedway Stout. It is an understatement to say that this beer was one of the blueprints for the Imperial Stout style. In what is a rare national release, the brewery will be releasing their Mostra Coffee and Coconut variant.
There is not anything much new I can tell you about the base beer, Speedway Stout, that has not been said at this point. What I can say is that for a beer rich in chocolate and dark fruit notes, it is surprisingly balanced and not cloying sweet. The best adjunct stouts start with a solid base, so you can check that box here.
For this coffee and coconut variant, the brewery works with Mostra Coffee, who contributes their Ghost Bear Coffee Blend. This blend features beans from Brazil, the Philippines, and El Salvador. Balancing out the mild coffee acidity, Alesmith adds coconut on coconut to provide a sweetness to the profile.
You can drink it today, you can drink it tomorrow, or you can drink it in a couple of years. Speedway Stout is the kind of beer you can buy three or four cans of and taste it as it ages. If you can get your hands on this Mostra Coffee and Coconut variant, do not miss out!
