The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the nurses are vaccinating. That can only mean that Spring is upon us, and what better way to tell Winter to shove off than with Trillium’s annual Kolsch release, Sprang.
A Kolsch is a simple style on paper but a difficult style to master. Falling somewhere between the cold fermentation of lagers and the room temperature fermentation of most ales, it possesses qualities of both. It is crisp and low ABV like a Marzen, but with a slightly fruity aroma that reminds you a bit of a Pale Ale.
Sprang is Trillium’s twist on the classic Kolsch. Cool fermented to accentuate the beer’s clean, crisp profile, the brewers then add a modest dose of Nelson Sauvin and Citra to give it a citrusy kick. “Crushable,” an adjective I use to describe beers you can drink many of, is the perfect way to describe Sprang.
Sprang also brings the release of the Trillium-branded Kolsch glassware. Do you need to drink Sprang out of a custom Kolsch glass? Probably not…but you would look a lot cooler if you did.
