Happy Belated Women’s Day to all the kickass women out there! To celebrate this momentous day, Pink Boots Society chapters host a collaboration brew day, all over the world! And while there were some obvious obstacles to making this years’ brew day as normal as possible, it led some chapters to get creative.

Pittsburgh’s PBS Chapter decided, out of precaution, to skip a big brew day. However, Altered Genius and ShuBrew welcomed all the females on their staff to their respective brew days. Inner Groove is also participating this year, with a brew day planned sometime this month and a release in April.

The PBS brew day was designed to bridge the gap and raise the profile of women’s roles in the beer industry. It also allows females to have a voice, as they assist in creating recipes, naming and marketing the beer, and doing just about all of the manual labor that comes with brewing, to make the beer truly their own!

Not to mention, this is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. Yakima Chief Hops, the industry’s leading hop-supplier, donates $3 per pound of hops sold to PBS’ educational and programming fund and participating breweries donate a portion of beer sold back to individual chapters, as well!

ShuBrew, a part female owned brewery located in the quaint town of Zelienople, PA, rebooted their “Shoots Like a Girl,” part of their Pixelated Series, inspired by classic video games. Shoots Like a Girl is a hazy, NEIPA with a creamy mouthfeel and hopped with this years special hop blend.

Since 2017, Yakima Chief Hops would host a hop selection at the Great American Beer Festival but due to the pandemic, and GABF going digital, Yakima hosted a unique virtual hop selection where PBS chapters were able to participate and vote. It was cool, in the sense that it opened the opportunity to many more women having a voice! (And if you’ve never been to a hop selection, it’s really quite fun.)

The outcome: 2021’s PBS hop blend consists of Cashmere, Ahtanum, Citra, Loral and Sabro hops, which creates a nice balance of tropical fruit and citrus flavor with woody and herbaceous aroma.

Altered Genius, a relatively new brewery in my hometown of Ambridge, PA, joined in on the PBS fun by brewing up a DIPA with 2-row, red wheat and flaked oat and of course, the PBS hop blend. The name is TBA but look for that brew coming out some time in April!

Inner Groove is re-releasing Tiffany Twisted, a 5.9% ABV NEIPA and if it’s anything like last years, it’s sure to be a hit (4.05 on Untappd!) Look for that beer in April, as well.

Be sure to follow @pgh.pinkboots on Instagram and Facebook for announcements on releases and to show your support! Remember, when you purchase any PBS collaboration brew, you are supporting higher education for all women in the brewing industry!
