For whatever reasons, the Barleywine Style has always been second fiddle (at least in America) to the Imperial Stout for big beers. However, Monkish Brewing (Torrance, California) does not adhere to the status quo, releasing their beast of a Barleywine, (appropriately named) Life Sized.

Brewed back in 2018 (remember 2018?), Life Sized started when Monkish and Anchorage Brewing got together to brew the HUGE Barleywine base. As is usually the case with great breweries, brewing is only the first step on the journey for this beer.

This beer originally went into Weller-wheated bourbon barrels for 16 months. But where most breweries usually start to bottle up, Monkish took things a step further. The beer was then transferred to Cognac barrels for an additional TEN MONTHS!

The end result is Life Sized, a Double Oaked Barleywine clocking in at 16% ABV. For obvious reasons, there are some limits to buying these bottles. Only two 500 mL bottles per customer and these premium bottles will run you about $50 per bottle. If you know Monkish and Anchorage, then you know their reputations more than assure you will get your money’s worth.
