Breweries are always looking for what could be the next big thing for flavor. Sometimes it is in the brewing process, whether that be with new machinery or techniques. But often the most unpredictable yet enticing innovations can be seen in the ingredients themselves.

Enter “Phantasm,” a new product that has been rolled out to select breweries to try. Breweries like Richmond’s The Veil have been given creative license to experiment with the new product and see what types of styles it works with.

Derived naturally from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grapes, this powder injects an interesting bouquet of aromas. The Veil describes it as being “a total thiol bomb,” when added to their hop-forward ales.

It is still too early to know how much the brewing community will embrace this new innovation. But know that brew teams around the world are painstakingly working to make sure that we get to the bottom of this mystery.
