Pubs in the UK are skirting COVID-19 restrictions with…. scotch eggs?

If you live in Pennsylvania like me, and you visit local breweries often, also like me, you’re probably aware of of that rule that stated you couldn’t order beer at a brewery unless you also had a substantial meal with it.

Of course you remember that. We all remember. Because those were the days when you were actually allowed to drink in a brewery while the pandemic was happening.

On July 16, 2020, Pennsylvania’s Governor Wolf enacted a restriction that limited indoor dining capacity to 25% and also required patrons to order a “substantial meal” with their drink.

The “substantial meal” wasn’t very well-defined when this rule came about, so breweries allowed their imaginations to run wild. Some breweries offered small bags of potato chips as a meal. Some offered hot dogs as a meal. Some even offered small bowls of cereal as a meal.

The Governor was pretty quick to shut that down and define the term “substantial meal”, however..

Today, that rule doesn’t really matter in our part of the globe because, as you know, indoor dining is currently fully restricted in PA until January 4th, 2021.

However, in the United Kingdom, pubs are still allowed to offer indoor dining, so long as they offer a “substantial meal”… (there’s that term again.)

And would you guess what pubs are doing to skirt that “substantial meal” requirement?? Yep, they’re offering Scotch eggs.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Scotch eggs are a delightful treat that are simply hard-boiled eggs, coated in sausage meat, breaded and then fried.

These delightful treats a popular in Pittsburgh at the local brewery, Cinderlands in the Strip District and Lawrenceville neighborhoods.

I use the term *treat* pretty intentionally here, as Scotch eggs, are hardly a filling meal (at least for myself).

But for a *treat*, Scotch eggs are absolutely delicious and I seriously can’t believe more breweries and restaurants in the States don’t embrace them.

Anyways, this post is soooo 2020.

Do you like Scotch eggs?
