It’s been quite a fall so far, hasn’t it? As we venture deeper into the colder months with the need to still venture outside for beers, I’m piling on my layers and doing the digging for you, friends! Here are my favorite places to snag a beer with outdoor seating in the ‘Burgh currently.
The Roundabout pop-up will forever top my list. At the start of my stint blogging for this excellent site, I wrote a post about how much I love that place. The feeling has increased even more during this COVID era. My husband and I bike around the city often, especially on Friday nights. We clear an easy few miles on the Three Rivers’ Heritage trail and settle in for dinner and brews.
My personal favorites? I adore Ginga Wheat (5%) something fierce. It’s the perfect post-biking beer and the ginger notes are sublime. This past week, I finally got to try the Jacked Up O’ Lantern Stout (5.2%) as well. The cinnamon blew me away and it was perfect on a night where I forgot my extra layers. Combine that with some food (shout out to La Palapa Pgh and my DEEP love of the plantain and cheese empanadas) and it’s my perfect night!
The second location on my list isn’t that far from the pop-up. Allegheny City has an excellent outdoor space that’s easy to access and enjoy. You can easily make it a second stop on your North Side biking tour! With a socially distanced beer garden, you can easily grab a pint across the street, or share a four pack of their amazing brews with a friend. I recommend the juicy goodness of the Singletrack Mind IPA: Sabro (6.2%).
Lastly, I’m going to take you over to Oakdale for an old favorite of mine. Helicon Brewing is right on the panhandle trail. If you’re a fan of biking or running, knock out some miles and stop by afterwards for a pint. Helicon produces my favorite Helles Lager (4.9%) in the ‘Burgh bar none. It’s clean, easy and perfect after a long ride. I also had the Festbier (6.2%) last time I was there and they knocked it out of the park with this fall treat! Grab some food at the truck, and you’re all set.
