If you’ve scoured the Pittsburgh craft beer scene on Instagram, you’ve likely ran across an account known as @hellobrewtifulpgh. Well, that’s at least how we met.
@HelloBrewtifulPGH is a great account for keeping with all things Pittsburgh craft beer, and following the posters journey through not only the Pittsburgh craft beer market, but also other great craft beers from around the world.
Today, we sat down with the poster behind @hellobrewtifulpgh to talk a little more about their journey in to craft beer and where they plan to take the account.
FBH: Tell us a little about how you got in to craft beer?
HBPGH: About 7 years ago I went to my first beer fest, Zoo Brew, at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. That is when I started trying and appreciating a bunch of different beers. From there, I started going to different festivals and breweries. I love the feeling of walking into a new brewery or beer fest. I’ve been hooked ever since.
What was the first craft beer you ever tried?
The first craft beer I ever tried was from North Country Brewing Co in Slippery Rock, PA. I want to say it was the Slimy Pebble Pils. I went to school there for my undergraduate studies and that was one of two places in town you could go. I’m not sure I truly appreciated what we had until now.
Do you have a particular style you enjoy most?
This is cliché, but I’ve always loved a good New England IPA. My taste changes almost every day, but this one has been a consistent favorite.
What drove you to start this Instagram account?
My husband and I were going to a lot of breweries, like, every weekend. Around the time I started my account we were tackling the Pittsburgh Brewers Guild’s Brewery Guide. I had lots of friends asking me for recommendations and what I thought about certain beers. I started the account so I could easily share my experiences about beer with friends. Along the way I discovered this entire social media community which has been really fun.
What kind of content could we expect on your Instagram account?
Overall, I try to keep a positive and fun tone that appeals to people who drink a lot of craft beer and people who might be new to craft beer. Beer is fun, but it is also someone’s craft that they worked really hard to produce. I try to keep that in mind when I’m sharing. I also love to provide content that supports and promotes the growing community of Pittsburgh beer. I feel very lucky to live in a city with so many epic places to visit and enjoy beer.
Hopefully one day I can share…places….again. I would love to expand and explore more beer outside and around the Pittsburgh region. I’m a huge fan of beercations and look forward to going on an adventure like that sometime soon.
What kind of equipment do you use to take your photos?
I use loaner equipment from anyone who has a better phone than mine. Frequent victims are my husband’s Galaxy and my friend’s iPhone. My phone is 6 years old and doesn’t do the beer or breweries justice. I’m embarrassed to admit that I did just buy a light ring that attaches to my phone, but honestly, I don’t get it.
What’s your plan for this account moving forward? Where do you see HelloBrewtifulPGH going?
My plan is to keep learning and growing. I’m not an expert, I don’t work in this industry, but I do appreciate and respect it. In the last 8 short months I feel like I’ve learned so much about beer and the culture around it. I appreciate all the people that I have met and talked to who have been supportive and positive.
I know one thing for sure, I’m definitely going to work on keeping my glass clean moving forward.
If you could only drink beer from only one brewery for the rest of your life, which brewery would you choose?
Grist House, with Cape May Brewing Co. being a close second.
How can we find you on social media if we wanted to learn more about you?
